Spain: Politician who said Israel massacres children honored by Jewish organisation

Via JTA:
A prominent Spanish organization that is dedicated to preserving the country’s Jewish heritage awarded a prize to a local politician who had accused Israel of “massacring” Palestinian children.
The Centro Sefarad-Israel, which was created with government funding in 2006 and based in Madrid, awarded its Crown of Esther prize on Thursday to Maite Pagazaurtundua, a Spanish lawmaker serving at the European Parliament, Europa Press reported. She received the award for her “defense of justice and freedom,” the report said.
In 2014, PagazaurtundĂșa co-signed a letter with several other members of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats — the parliamentary bloc to which PagazaurtundĂșa’s Union of Progress and Democracy belongs — condemning Israel’s actions against Hamas in Gaza. It was addressed to Martin Schulz, then the president of the European Parliament.
“An immediate ceasefire is needed to put an end to the massacre and the suffering of the civilian population, many of them children,” the letter read.
The letter co-signed by PagazaurtundĂșa, a Basque politician who is known in Spain for denouncing the terrorist activities of the ETA Basque nationalist militia, did not mention Hamas or Palestinian terrorism.

Malta: "The Jews are the real terrorists. Wherever they go, there is bloodshed and war"

Such comments appear quite often on social media and comments online, and do not often get to the top news.  I guess it's a slow news-day for Malta.

Note that the perpetrator here is a Labour Party candidate.  He does not think it's racist at all to say that Jews are responsible for war wherever they go.

Via Times of Malta:
Social Solidarity Minister Michael Farrugia replied that “everyone has the right to their personal opinion” after a consultant posted potentially anti-Semitic remarks on Facebook.

Family therapist Charlie Azzopardi wrote on his personal Facebook page on October 8: “The Jews are the real terrorists. Wherever they go, there is bloodshed and war” (translated from Maltese).
The comment accompanied a news video of undercover Israeli security forces infiltrating and attacking a group of Palestinian stone throwers during the recent escalated violence in the region.

Speaking to the Times of Malta yesterday, Dr Farrugia said the comments did not reflect his own personal point of view, adding he did not feel he should involve himself in anyone’s personal opinion.

“Dr Azzopardi has to defend that opinion himself,” the minister said. “I can only speak about my opinion about the Middle East, which is that I want to see peace, including a Palestinian State.”
(...)

When contacted, Dr Azzopardi refused to comment on the incident, saying only he would leave it up to the public to decide “what is racist and what isn’t”.

Dr Azzopardi, who unsuccessfully contested the last general election on the Labour Party ticket, is employed by the ministry as a consultant on “family issues” on a €17,000 annual contract.   more

Germany: FDP politician forgets that Israelis are not all Jews, and vice versa

I'm sure that when she's accused of antisemitism, she makes sure to point out that we shouldn't conflate Jews with Israel.

Via Watch: Antisemitism in Europe:
Not only gave the federal executive of the FDP, the liberal Free Democratic Party, Alexandra Thein her consent with Mahmoud Abbas' speech at the UN General Assembly in a recent post on her Facebook page, she also went further than Abbas by speaking of Jews instead of Israel.
She said: "Abbas is right. Oslo only onesidely turned into account for the Jews and prolonged the inhumane destiny of the Palestinians ad infinitum". Read more (in German)

UK: BBC translates "Jews" as "Israelis"

AFP does so as well.

European media whitewashes Palestinian antisemitism.  They don't report antisemitic incidents, and when Palestiniasn actually tell them they hate Jews, they translate it as 'Israelis'.

Why?  Because obviously, if Palestinians say "Jews" they mean "Israelis".  After all, Palestine only got 93% in the ADL's global antisemitism survey.

This is the same media that later shrugs its shoulders when Muslims attack  Jews in Europe and say that they're 'conflating' Jews and Israelis.

Via the Jewish Chronicle (h/t Avi Mayer):
A BBC documentary has substituted the word “Israelis” for "Jews" in its translation of interviews with Palestinians, its maker has admitted.

Lyse Doucet has stood by the decision to translate “yahud” as “Israeli” in subtitles on her hour-long documentary Children of the Gaza War, which airs on BBC Two tonight.

The correct translation for “yahud” from Arabic to English is “Jew”.

The BBC’s chief international correspondent said that Gazan translators had advised her that Palestinian children interviewed on the programme who refer to “the Jews” actually meant Israelis.

Russia: Jewish actor told to 'go back to the Promised Land'

Via IzRus:

Leonid Yarmolnik, a Jewish-Russian actor, was a panelist on a talk show on Russia-1 TV.  The issue was a law against killing stray dogs.

During the discussion, one of the other panelists did not like Yarmolnik's views on adopting animal-protection laws, so he whispered something to him.  Yarmolnik turned to the audience and informed them he was just invited to leave Russia and go to the Promised Land.  He then left the set.

Yarmolnik blames Russia-1, which he says was interested in causing conflict in order to draw an audience.

Germany: "No Jewish flags"

Via Walla:

Almog Cohen, an Israeli footballer playing for FC Ingolstadt 04, tweeted today that during a game in Berlin some of the fans waved an Israeli flag.  One of the security officers removed it, saying "no Jewish flags".

Update: via BZ Berlin, h/t Jann Forell.  The flag was removed by a police officer.  According to FC Ingolstadt, they were told that because of the large Palestinian community, Berlin doesn't want political statements in the arena.

European Media: Jews exploit Palestinian children

European media like to point out after every Muslim attack on European Jews that the poor offender just got confused between 'Jews' and 'Israelis'.

What the media forgets to mention is that they themselves aren't clear on that point.  In fact, many times, when reporting about those evil Israelis, they make it quite clear to their readers that the problem is not all Israelis, but very specifically the Jews.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) recently posted a report saying that Israeli settlers were using Palestinian child labor.  This report was widely reported by the European media. As UK Media Watch pointed out, the HRW report used a picture of a Palestinian child working on a Palestinian farm.  But the media aren't interested in Palestinian child labor, they are only interested in telling their readers that Israel is pure evil.  Their readers understand that, and that's reflected in the quite expected comments to every such article.

The report itself does not state the words "Jewish settlers".  That did not bother the European media from pointing out to their readers that it is indeed the Jews, and not just Israelis, that are persecuting the Palestinians.

It should also be noted that while the media positions Jews vs. Palestinians, they don't usually emphasize that Palestinians are Muslims.  We wouldn't want to incite against Muslims, right?

Belgium  - VRT Headline, "Jewish colonists put Palestinian children to work"

Germany - Zeit article (via AFP) "HRW condemned... the employment of Palestinian children in farms run by Jewish settlers".

Norway - NRK article:  "HRW calls Israel to stop using Palestinian child-laborers in Jewish settlements"  (this is followed by a quote from HRW that only mentions Israel, not Jews!)

Poland - Radio Poland headline: "HRW: Jewish settlers put Palestinian children to work"

United Kingdom - Telegraph article:  "Around 4,500 Jewish settlers and 60,000 Palestinians live in the Jordan Valley region, a 75-mile long strip of land abutting the River Jordan."

Denmark: Online comments blame Israel's aggression on circumcision

A new Danish blog 'Antisemitisme watch' follows antisemitism online.

In a recent post, the blog reports on various antisemitic comments made in the context of the 'circumcision debate' - that is, the debate in Denmark as to whether circumcision should be banned. The comments are from Facebook, posted on the wall of Professor Morten Frisch, a Danish doctor who rejects circumcision, and on the wall of Jewish-Danish journalist Martin Krasnik.

Of 72 comments the blog had received, they posted 11.  I'll bring just a few of those.

1. Commentator says that they should cut it off completely so they can't breed.

2. Commentator says circumcision is still permitted because left-wing politicians are beholden to the Muslim vote. And the Jewish lobby is powerful.  The latter idea recurs in other comments.

3. Commentator says that circumcision leads to poorer sex-life, which leads to frustration and aggression. Just look at Israel

4. Commentator tells Krasnik that they're tired of his attitudes and that "we've got more than enough of Hitler, but it's scary that Israel and the Jewish state follow the same principles"

UK: SNP leader dismayed by antisemitism in Scotland

Source: Daphne Anson
Source: Daphne Anson
The Jewish Chronicle reports:

The level of antisemitic abuse in Scotland in the past year has been dismaying, a leading politician has said.

The Scottish National Party’s Westminster leader, Angus Robertson, addressed the issue in a meeting with Jewish leaders. He said: "There has to be constant vigilance against intolerance of all kinds in our communities – and any growth in antisemitism is quite simply unacceptable."

His party would continue to support Holocaust education and reaffirmed the SNP’s commitment to protecting religious slaughter, he added. Mr Robertson said that while his party had concerns about Israel’s military action in Gaza, Scottish Jews’ worries about the disproportionate focus on Israel in the Scottish Parliament must be acknowledged.  More.

Sweden: The 'Jewish flag'

During SVT's report from Copenhagen, following the terror attack there, Aktuellt reporter  Thomas Lundström described the Israeli flag as 'the Jewish flag'.

When the media attack Israel, they claim 'Jews' and 'Israel' are two completely different things which should not be 'confused'.

Obviously, they don't believe it themselves.

Belgium: Media reports about "Jews who want to go back"

I need to make a new tag for 'media hypocrisy when it comes to Jews'.

When Netanyahu called Jews to 'come back home', Europeans were upset at the nerve of the Israeli Prime Minister.  The home of European Jews is Europe.  Why should Israel be their home?  That's such a Zionist sentiment.

But, of course, there's one standard for Jews and Israel and there's another standard for the media.

Brussels is currently hosting its first every Aliya-fair, for Jews interested in making Aliyah to Israel.

Flemish paper De Morgen decided to title this story: "Fair for Jews who want to go back".

Go back where?  The answer is so obvious, De Morgen editors didn't even feel the need to specify.

VRT headlined the same story: "First info-fair for Jews who want to move to Israel", but the article itself refers to Jews who "go back to Israel".  Same goes for their video report.

France: AFP reports that Jewish State not responsible for floods

So, AFP finally concluded that Israel couldn't have possibly flooded Gaza.  Better than nothing, I suppose.  Hopefully, next time they'll think twice before posting obvious conspiracy theories against Jews.

Their article is really careful in trying to avoid talking about the elephant in the room: Palestinian antisemitism, the Palestinian belief in conspiracy theories involving Israel and Jews:

Once again this winter, following days of very heavy rainfall across the region, the banks of a riverbed running through central Gaza were breached, flooding dozens of Palestinian homes.
For the residents, there was no doubt: Israel was responsible after deliberately opening "a dam" to flood the enclave.

But an examination of the facts on the Israeli side tells another story, shattering a long-held Palestinian myth.

I doubt the myth is shattered and I'm sure that next year we'll once again hear about Israel flooding poor Gaza.   Those accusations might not make it to the world press, after this year's fiasco, but they will make the rounds among antisemites and anti-Zionists who believe that Jews are evil.

Note also that this article, even while whitewashing Palestinian antisemitism, specifies yet once against the Israel is "the Jewish State".
That Israel, the invisible enemy on the other side of the fence, would flood Gaza in a bid to make life even worse is therefore accepted as fact -- as is the alleged existence of one or more dams upstream controlled by the Jewish state.
This is the same media, I'll remind you, that complains when ordinary citizens 'conflate' Jew and Israel.  The same media that washes its hands of antisemitism when it reports that Israel (AKA 'The Jewish State') is responsible for the murder of innocent children, and forgets to report about Palestinian antisemitic incitement aimed at children and Palestinian glorification of terrorism aimed at children.

France: RFI reporter denies #floodlibel against 'Jewish State' is a hoax

See here for media roundup of the antisemitic Palestinian blood-libel against Israel.

Nicolas Ropert is RFI's journalist in Ramallah.  When Al-Jazeera and AFP broke the 'story' that Israel was flooding Gaza on purpose and without warning, causing dozens of people to flee for their lives, Ropert did what every responsible reporter does.  He ate it all up.

In fact, even today, RFI's article still stands and still claims that Israel opens its dams 'several times a year'.  The original article simply stated that "Israel did not respond immediately to these accusations", but this was 'fixed'.  Now the article adds "... but later denied them."

Ropert's article also specifically calls Israel "the Jewish State", just so you don't forget who is really responsible for flooding those poor Gazans.

It sounds like Ropert and RFI are antisemites who will publish any blood-libel they can and blame the Jews for it.

On his Twitter, Ropert was asked why he published the hoax.  To which Ropert answered (here and here) "Hoax?  Wasn't there a flood?  I quoted the Palestinian authorities.  Israel denies, okay, but what do your satellite images prove?  Barely nothing. Sorry."

I'm also sorry.

I'm sorry that so-called journalists like Nicolas Ropert publish every outlandish claim by Hamas and the Palestinian Authority without once pausing to think if they make sense.

I'm sorry Ropert and RFI believe that a country like Israel would purposefully flood Gaza.

I'm sorry Ropert and RFI believe the 'Evil Jews Zionists (TM)' trope.

I'm sorry Ropert and RFI are so gullible.

I'm sorry the Israeli authorities did not take any action against all those journalists who published this story without fact-checking.  It is not the first time the Palestinians claims the Jews are trying to kill them by opening up Israel's non-existent dams.  The Palestinians keep on coming up with these blood-libels because they know that reporters like Ropert will eat it all up, and that his readers in Europe will believe it, because it said so in the paper.  And they'll hate Israel and the Jews even more.

Ropert thinks he's unbiased, because he got both sides of the story.  I'm sure that back in Medieval Europe he would have also reported both sides of the blood-libel, without any bias whatsoever.  He would have reported about the poor Christian kid who was murdered, interviewed his parents and friends and cry with them about lost youth and about those evil Jews who keep on killing innocent Christian children.  And he would have added that the Jews deny the claims.   It's not antisemitism, it's balanced reporting.

It would be funny if we won't be paying for it with Jewish blood down the road.

Al-Jazeera, meanwhile, retracted their article on the 'not hoax' and apologized for their error.

With much thanks to Rudi for his help with this article.

France: AFP 'corrects' Palestinian antisemitism, translates 'Jew' as 'Israel'

I mentioned this in the wrap-up post regarding #floodgate, but I thought it deserved a mention of its own too.  h/t Camera.

AFP interviewed Ead Zino, a resident of Al-Maghraqa who explained that the Jews flood Gaza on purpose.

In the clip Zino says in Arabic "This is all political, the Jews want to destroy us."

But AFP did not want to focus on Palestinian antisemitism or Palestinian blood-libels against Jews. Their story was all about how Evil Jews Zionists want to kill poor, innocent Palestinians who can never, ever do anything wrong.

So AFP mis-translated Zino's words.  On purpose.

In their translation, Zino says "This is all political.  All Israel wants is to destroy us."

See how easily they took care of Palestinian antisemitism?

See the clip below at about 00:20.  Zino says 'al-Yahud', AFP translates 'Israel'.

Europe: Media spreads conspiracy theories against Jews

Following a major winter storm that caused flooding all over, the Palestinian Authority accused Israel of 'opening up the dams' in order to flood Gaza on purpose.

The accusations are, of course, baseless.

(article is updated with additional media reports.)

Current situation:
* Al-Jazeera pulled their story and apologized.
* Daily Mail updated their story and apologized.    However, the article still brings the Palestinian claims.
* AFP pulled their story, no apology.  Their clips still appears on various news-sites.
* Walla pulled their story, no apology.
* Europe Press, Addressa (NTB), RFI, L'Hebdo, 20 Minutes, RT still headlining their story with  Palestinian accusations.  RT does bring Israeli denials somewhere in the article.

Spain

Spanish media agency Europa Press reported the story as news (h/t ReVista).  "Hundreds of Palestinians flee floods caused by the opening of Israeli dams"

Europa Press did not bother getting the Israeli side, because they couldn't really care less.

Europe Press later added another article saying that Israel denies the accusations and that there's no such dam in southern Israel.  Imagine that.  The original article was not updated.

France

AFP posted a clip headlined: "Gaza village floods after Israel opens dam gates".  The clip was picked up by MSN.

AFP interviewed a local resident who claimed that "this is political, all the Jews want is to destroy us".  AFP 'corrected' the resident's words, so it would sound less antisemitic, and translated it as "all Israel wants is to destroy us".

No other information was offered on the topic.

AFP spreading conspiracy theories against Jews

RFI, Radio France International, qualifies its headline just a bit (h/t Rudi).  "Floods in Gaza: the Palestinian authorities accuse Israel"

RFI checked with Israel, but got no comment.

In the article, btw, RFI points out to its readers that Israel is "the Jewish State".  Just in case you didn't know.

RFI spreading conspiracy theories against Jews

20 Minutes published the AFP story as well, with the headline "village flooded by opening of dam" (h/t Rudi).

Norway

Norwegian news agency NTB also came out with the story.  Here on Norwegian news-site Adressa: "Israel accused of causing flood in the Gaza Strip".

Sub-headline: "At least 80 Palestinian families had to evacuate their homes in the Gaza Strip after Israel opened several dams without warning."

The article quotes Al-Jazeera and Palestinian sources, but does not quote any Israeli sources.  They do however refer once to "Israel's alleged opening of the dams".  Thank you.

NTB spreading conspiracy theories against Jews

United Kingdom

The Daily Mail originally posted the story (h/t Rudi) with the headline "Hundreds of Palestinians left homeless after Israel opens river dam and floods houses… hours before Jewish state’s electric company cuts off power in West Bank cities".  The article states that Israel denies the claims.

The headline was later changed to "Hundreds of Palestinians left homeless by heavy flooding after water levels in Gaza Valley rise by up to 10 feet", but the URL still shows the original headline.  The updated article gave Israel's response that there are no dams in Southern Israel so there was nothing to open.

The Daily Mail spreading conspiracy theories against Jews

Russia

RT posted the story with the headline (h/t presspectiva): "Palestine accuses Israel of opening dams, flooding Gaza, forcing evacuations".

The article ends with this little gem:
According to media reports, this is not the first time Israeli authorities have opened the floodgates to their Gaza Valley dams to discharge massive quantities of excessive water that accumulated during heavy rains or snowfall.
The 'media reports' are of course Maan News, the Palestinian news agency that started this libel in the first place.  RT posted as-is, without wondering where those 'Gaza valley dams' are located.

RT spreading conspiracy theories against Jews

Israel

Walla! news site also posted an article spreading the libel (h/t presspectiva).  Their headline: "Dozens of houses in Gaza flooded due to opening of dams in Israel".  Notice that the headline is in quotes.  That is, they're 'only' quoting the other antisemites.

But Walla didn't think the story was good enough, and so they added a twist of their own.  According to Walla's reporters, army officials said they "had to drain the rain water" that accumulated on the border fence due to the stormy weather.

Switzerland

L'Hebdo put up AFP's clip under the headline "village flooded by opening of dam" (h/t Rudi).  The article explains Israel did it.

L'Hebdo spreading conspiracy theories against Jews

These journalists are inciting to kill Jews!

These European journalists find it easy to accept yet another conspiracy theory against Jews, because it's couched in terms they can relate to.  Israel is evil and is flooding Gaza for no real reason.  Sounds logical, doesn't it?

Can you imagine anybody writing such an article about the claims that shape-shifting Jews committed massacres in Europe?  Neither can I.

UK: The Times reports from 'the Jewish border'

photo via Twitter

The Times reports that an Iranian general was killed as "he visited Syria to oversee plans to build a missile base near the Jewish border."

Journalist Hugh Tomlinson claimed on Twitter that the original read "the Jewish State".

As if that makes everything okay.

Let's review reality for a second:

1. When the media attacks Israel, they say they're not being antisemitic, because 'Israel' is not the same as 'Jews'.

2. When the media reports on Israel, they sometimes refer to it as 'the Jewish State'.   For no real reason, other than to remind their readers that we're talking about Jews here.

The media cannot comprehend that by bashing Israel they're increasing antisemitism in their own home countries.

By 'bashing Israel' I do not mean articles that thoughtfully criticize a certain Israeli policy (those are very rare), but rather articles which take any anti-Israel source as the gospel truth, get emotionally involved and indiscriminately throw around phrases like 'genocide' and 'ethnic cleansing'.

If you accuse Israel of genocide, you're accusing Jews of genocide.  That seems obvious to most people, besides the media and politicians.

EU Media: Israel is the Jewish State, and only we can say that

As I'm sure you all know, the Israeli parliament recently started debating a law officially declaring Israel a "Jewish State".

The debate was reported in every European paper with editorials explaining the problem with it.

Which surprised me, because many in the European media constantly refer to Israel as the Jewish State.

Personally, the term makes me uncomfortable.  I think this constant reminder that "hey, we're talking about Jews here" borders on the antisemitic.  As far as I can see, Israel is the only country that gets a moniker based on its character and not, for example, based on its location ('the Middle-Eastern state').

However, I've never complained about it, because it's actually true.  Israel is the one and only Jewish state.  In some cases, it also makes sense to point it out.

What I find surprising, though, is that the same media that until now bothered to remind its readers that Israel is a Jewish State, is now feigning complete ignorance on the topic.  "Israel is a Jewish State? Really?  Isn't that..  undemocratic or something?"

I cannot say this about every European country.  In some countries it's more endemic, and in some it's only used in some related context, but here's a few representative examples.

If any readers can point me to more media in other countries, please drop me a note.
