UK: Antisemitic graffiti with Christian motifs in Aberdeen

Via CAA:
Antisemitic graffiti was found in Aberdeen on Viewfield Road opposite Gordon Highlanders, close to the venue of the Shalom Festival which celebrates Israeli culture.

The graffiti shows as Star of David and the number 666, described as the “number of the beast” in the Textus Receptus manuscripts of the Christian bible’s Book of Revelation. Alongside the graffiti is the shorthand “M2S” which is sometimes used to mean “Menace to society”.

Europe: NGOs new feudalism and how one German scammed the system in Israel

Via The Jerusalem Post (Seth Frantzman):
Recently a man named Sherzad Mosa walked into a bar in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdish region of Iraq, and was surprised to overhear a woman describe it as an “NGO bar.” Mosa wondered on Facebook why hundreds of thousands of refugees are living in the Kurdish region, and “kids and women” are suffering while “200 NGOs have more than 1,600 foreign people working for them and they are getting paid more than $10,000 per month and staying in the best hotels?” Others commented on his thread that NGO workers were driving around in brand new vehicles and spending just a few hours with refugees and then driving back to their hotels.

What these men had seen was only a small piece of a new kind of feudalism that involves governments, NGOs, international organizations and to a lesser extent media and academics.  (...)
Working in the Palestinian territories I came across these kinds of NGO employees and members of UN and EU government staffs over the years. Their fleets of SUVs plied the streets and their workers made ten times the local salaries. On their own they joked about the job they were doing. One German working on Palestinian election issues admitted it was all a financial windfall. There would never be elections, he said, “but I make great money here and get a resume builder.” A man we met who had a political science degree had somehow become a “security expert” for an international organization, giving “assessments” about threats in Gaza.
Organizations such as the “Temporary International Presence in Hebron” are not temporary, existing for decades and paying salaries to Europeans who spend their weekends, as evidenced by their vehicles, enjoying themselves at Jerusalem or Tel Aviv bars. The new colonials call themselves “internationals.”

If the interest was education, in places such as Africa we would expect to see a process of indigenization, whereby high-level staff and well-paid positions are held not by outsiders, but by increasingly educated locals. But we don’t see that. In places like Haiti we see generations of NGOs paying non-Haitians exorbitant salaries to help local people. In effect what has happened is the creation of a new colonial empire, staffed with the same upper class Westerners that previously staffed the high echelons of colonial administrations.

“Working for the empire” has been replaced with “get a job at an NGO.”

This may be called “non-profit,” but there are large profits involved. Aiding the “third world” is not the selfless task it appears to be, but a key part of a system that has developed to move salaries from donors to their class peers. In essence almost all the money spent on projects in the third world remains in the first world. There isn’t wealth transfer to the global south, rather there are salaries that start in Europe and stay in Europe.

Germany: Bank pulls plug on anti-Israel BDS bank account

Via The Jerusalem Post (Benjamin Weinthal):
Shutdown reasons may include terrorism and antisemitism.
The Bank für Sozialwirtschaft (Bank for Social Economy) has closed the account of a German group that promotes the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against the Jewish state.

The Cologne-based bank notified the anti-Israel NGO Jewish Voice for a Just Peace in the Middle East that its account will be shut down by the end of the year, according to an article that appeared on the anti-Zionist website Der Semit on Thursday.
The Jerusalem Post, as part of its reporting earlier this year on European banks that maintain BDS and terrorism-related accounts, found that the Bank for Social Economy account was listed on the NGO’s website, in an effort to attract donations.
After receiving a Post query in September alleging Hamas links to the Jewish Voice group, as well as that it was spreading contemporary antisemitism and engaging in BDS activities, the bank opened an investigation, spokeswoman Stephanie Rüth said.

UK: Boy avoids going outside after being beaten up and called a ‘stupid Jew' in one of 32 anti-Semitic attacks in north London in one month

Via The Daily Mail:
The father of an eight-year-old boy who was beaten up on his way home and called a ‘stupid Jew’ has said his son avoids going outside after the attack.
When the child does leave the house, he ‘looks over his shoulder’ due to his continued trauma following the assault near Stamford Hill, north London.
It was among 32 anti-Semitic attacks on Orthodox Charedi Jews in the area over one month that London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said he will ‘urgently’ investigate.
Others, recorded by Jewish community group Stamford Hill Shomrim, included a boy, 11, who was threatened with violence if he did not remove his skullcap.
The father of the eight-year-old told MailOnline: ‘He was very upset and shaken by the experience.
‘He keeps looking over his shoulder whenever he’s out and about, he regularly tries to avoid going outside, and he feels insecure.’ (...)
OTHER SICKENING ATTACKS RECORDED BY STAMFORD HILL SHOMRIM
A 55-year-old Jewish woman was asked, while praying, if she covered her hair on her head because Hitler had shaved it off – the thug then made a Nazi salute.
Three terrified Jewish women were chased by yobs shouting ‘The Jewish people are rich, horrible Jewish people, give us your money’.

Croatia: President poses with pro-Nazi regime symbol

Via Times of Israel:
Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic sparked online debate Saturday as it emerged she posed for a photo during her recent Canada trip with a flag carrying a symbol of her country’s wartime pro-Nazi regime.

Her office shrugged off the incident, insisting there was “nothing questionable” about it.

The photo, posted on Facebook by a Croatian man living in Canada, shows Grabar-Kitarovic posing with him and others in front of a flag bearing the coat of arms used by Croatia’s World War II-era Ustasha regime, which persecuted and killed hundreds of thousands of Serbs, Jews, Roma and anti-fascists.

The checkerboard-patterned shield in the middle of Croatia’s current national flag has 25 red and white squares, starting with a red one in the top-left corner.

A different version with a white square in that corner has been used at other points in Croatia’s history — notably by the Ustasha. It was replaced by the current shield after World War II when Croatia was part of the former Yugoslavia.

Both versions were briefly in use in 1990 ahead of Croatia’s declaration of independence, but under a December 1990 law the national flag bears the red-first version of the shield.

The presidency batted off the row over the photo of Grabar-Kitarovic, telling N1 television, “We see nothing questionable in it.” It noted that such a flag was displayed in front of the Croatian parliament in 1990.

The president’s view on the wartime regime is “clear and she voiced it on several occasions,” it added. Grabar-Kitarovic has condemned the Ustasha in the past.

Sweden: Educational Broadcasting Company aired “The Occupation of the American Mind"

Via The Times of Israel:
Israel’s ambassador to Stockholm called on the Swedish public to join him in protesting to the country’s state-owned educational television station over its airing of a one-sided anti-Israel documentary. He also demanded that a pro-Israel documentary now be screened to correct the imbalance.
Earlier this month, Utbildningsradion, the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company, aired “The Occupation of the American Mind: Israel’s Public Relations War in the United States,” which features some of the world’s most prominent critics of the Jewish state.
Narrated by former Pink Floyd singer and vocal anti-Israel activist Roger Waters, the film contains interviews with Amira Hass, Noam Chomsky, Norman Finkelstein, Max Blumenthal, Stephen Walt, Rashid Khalidi, Yousef Munayyer and other “leading observers of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” according to its website.
The hour-long documentary presents footage from interviews top Israeli officials gave to US media outlets during the 2014 Gaza war, interspersed with comments by “experts” analyzing Jerusalem’s ostensible success in manipulating American public opinion in Israel’s favor. “What gets pushed out of the frame entirely [in American coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict] is the fact that for almost 50 years Palestinians have been systematically dispossessed from their land and denied their most basic human rights,” one interviewee argues. Another charges that Israelis “have been allowed to defend the indefensible to the American public through mis-education and misinformation campaigns, through effective talking points.” (...)
The Swedish broadcaster had shown the film only after a disclaimer acknowledging its one-sided slant, he (the Israeli ambassador) wrote, but if there were enough reservations about the work’s fairness, “one could ask why such a partial and unbalanced piece was in the end aired at all.”

UK: ‘Zio’ is an anti-Semitic insult, Camden councillors say

Via Ham&High (h/t Honestly Concerned):
Camden Council is set to consider a motion to class the term “Zio” – short for “Zionist” – as an anti-Semitic epithet.

The move comes after hate-speakers have been “emboldened” over the last 15 months, the council motion explains.

It also expresses “alarm” about the disruption of an October 27 event at UCL hosted by the university’s Friends of Israel society, which is now under police investigation.

“This council acknowledges the unique and pernicious nature of anti-Semitism for cultural and historical reasons amongst various and sadly all too plentiful cases of racism and discrimination,” the statement reads.

“The term ‘Zio’ [is] no different from other racist epithets used against the Jewish community.”

Cllr Gio Spinella gave notice of the motion, while Cllr Phil Rosenberg proposed an amendment calling on UCL and other universities to “establish clear protocols” that “safeguard both free speech and the right to peacefully protest but with a robust response to those who cross the line”.

The move has been hailed by Community Security Trust (CST), a charity devoted to protecting British Jews from attack.

Germany: Supermarket Edeka denies neo-Nazi symbolism in TV ad

Via Guardian:
Germany’s largest supermarket chain has been criticised for a Christmas television advert that appears to contain covert neo-Nazi symbolism.

The ad for the Christmas range at Edeka features two cars with number plates displaying codes commonly used by neo-Nazis to identify themselves to each other.

A Volvo shown in the 84-second clip has the number plate MU SS 420. “SS” is forbidden on German number plates because it is synonymous with the Schutzstaffel, the Nazis’ paramilitary “protection squadron”.

The number 420 is a common abbreviation – especially in far-right circles in the US – for Nazi leader Adolf Hitler’s birthday, 20 April.

Another car in the ad has the number plate SO LL 3849. The 84 is recognised as an abbreviation for the eighth and fourth letters of the alphabet – H and D – signifying the greeting “Heil Deutschland”. The numbers 3 and 9, together as number 39, are said to symbolise Christian identity and stand, by implication, for antisemitism.

German car owners are largely free to pick their own number and letter combinations for number plates at no extra cost. For several years authorities have noted a rise in the number of extremists using letter and number combinations to convey messages and signify their allegiances.

Sabine Bamberger-Stemmann, the director of Hamburg’s agency of civic education, a federal public authority that provides political education across Germany, has analysed the number plates and said she is convinced the Nazi symbolism must have been deliberately placed.

Netherlands: Plot to Bomb Amsterdam Synagogue Revealed in Leaked Intelligence Reports

Via Algemeiner (h/t Honestly Concerned):
A plot to bomb an Amsterdam synagogue, planned by a Muslim terrorist cell based in the Netherlands — revealed on Thursday in leaked intelligence documents obtained by the Dutch daily De Telegraaf — is simply the latest evidence of the “very unsafe environment for Jews in the country,” a political activist told The Algemeiner.

Awi Cohen, a board member of Likud Netherlands — the Dutch arm of the Israeli Prime Minister’s party, with the self-described mission of speaking out for Jewish rights internationally — was responding to the Dutch Criminal Intelligence Agency (TFI) dossier, which describes a “James Bond-like plan” to attack a Jewish house of worship and a bank, discovered when a regular visitor to the Arrayan Mosque in northern Amsterdam was identified as a member of the group devising the strikes.

The man — referred to in the report as a “Moroccan” with a “great knowledge of Islam” — is one of a number of individuals associated with the mosque whom the TFI suspects of involvement in Islamist radicalization and jihad-related activities.

France moves to label settlement goods while ignoring over 200 territorial disputes

Via The Times of Israel:
France published an official notification Thursday urging businesses to use labels to identify goods produced in the Israeli settlements, prompting a swift condemnation from Israel.
It was not immediately clear whether the notice published in the French Official Journal is binding for retailers or a recommendation. A press official with the trade ministry said late Thursday she was not aware of the notification and couldn’t immediately say whether it was mandatory or advisory. (...)
Late Thursday, Israel’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said “it’s unfortunate that France, which has a law against boycotts, is advancing steps like these which can be interpreted as giving a tail wind to radical actors and the boycott movement against Israel.”
The Israeli statement added: “Furthermore, it is incredible and even worrying that France chose to apply a double standard by [making such a law] only for Israel, while ignoring over 200 territorial disputes currently ongoing in the world, including those taking place on its threshold.”

Norway church denounces Luther’s anti-Jewish writings

Via The Times of Israel:
Ahead of Reformation’s 500th anniversary, Lutheran Church distances itself from founder’s anti-Jewish bias.
Norway’s state Lutheran Church has condemned the anti-Jewish legacy of Martin Luther, the 16th century German theologian who started the Protestant Reformation.
In a statement issued Friday ahead of next year’s 500-year anniversary of the Reformation, the Church of Norway’s General Synod said some of Luther’s writings were later used in anti-Semitic propaganda, including in Nazi Germany.
Noting that such propaganda was also spread in Nazi-occupied Norway during World War II, the synod said that “in the Reformation anniversary year of 2017, we as a church must clearly distance ourselves from the anti-Judaism that Luther left behind.”

Ukraine: Synagogue desecrated with ‘death to Jews’ graffiti

Photo: Miriam

Via Times of Israel:
Unidentified individuals wrote “death to the Jews” on the main synagogue of a city in Ukraine that earlier this month saw the rededication of another Jewish house of worship.

The hateful graffiti was discovered last week on the façade of the Central Synagogue in Chernivtsi, a city located 255 miles southwest of Kiev, a leader of the local Jewish community said.

Earlier this month, hundreds of Orthodox Jews convened at the Chernivtsi district of Sadhora of for the rededication of a synagogue that was built in the 19th century by followers of the influential Hasidic rabbi Israel Friedman of Ruzhyn. It had fallen into disrepair decades ago.

“It’s a shame to admit that when the country is dealing with war, instead of uniting society, some provocateurs are trying to sow ethnic hatred,” Ilya Hoach, leader of the local Jewish charity Miriam, wrote on Facebook, along with photos of the vandalism. The perpetrators also drew a cross on the synagogue.

UK: Jewish students accuse Cambridge of hushing up anti-Semitic attack

Via The Telegraph UK:
First Court, Christ's College
Three Jewish students were subjected to vile anti-Semitic abuse by members of a Cambridge University drinking society amid allegations of a cover up.
One of the victims has accused university authorities of failing to investigate the attack properly. Two members of Christ’s College have been disciplined for their part in the assault although they were cleared of anti-Semitism.
Christ’s College has declined to identify the perpetrators or reveal the punishment – if any – meted out to the drinking society members.
The students were set upon by a mob after they entered the graduate union building in Mill Lane, Cambridge, at the end of last month. The bar area had been rented out for a party jointly held by the sporting societies of Christ’s College.
One of the victims, Shlomo Roiter-Jesner, 25, who is studying politics at Hughes Hall, told The Telegraph: “It was a closed party so we walked out but as we did so these individuals started getting more physical and more vocal and they noticed our kippot [Jewish skullcaps].
“All of a sudden they were shouting: 'Jew, get f------ out of here’. We tried to leave but they were yelling at us.”
In an email to Professor Jane Stapleton, master of Christ’s College, sent a day after the attacks, another of the Jewish students, who does not wish to be named, wrote: “We heard shouting and were literally grabbed and pulled out of the building by about seven large, intimidating males.
“We, and other bystanders, heard a number of vicious anti-Semitic slurs including 'f------ Jew, you don’t belong here’, 'dirty Jew’ and to myself, 'f--- off, darkie’. "They then proceeded to try and choke my friend with his scarf, leaving him gasping for oxygen, and to push me and the third friend around, despite our attempts to de-escalate the situation. They eventually went back in after threatening to 'smash our faces in’.”

Holland: Publisher’s contract with Hezbollah fan About Jahjah causes authors walkout

Via JTA:
A Dutch publishing house that was founded by anti-Nazi fighters lost some of its best-known authors following its contract with a Hezbollah supporter who has accused Israel of genocide.
Leon de Winter, a Dutch-Jewish writer who is one of the Netherlands’ best-known novelists, said he joined the walkout by three other writers from De Bezige Bij last week, partly because the company was “lacking a leader” but also over its publication of the book “Plea for Radicalization” by Dyab Abou Jahjah — a Lebanon-born activist from Belgium who has called for violent attacks on Israeli Jews.
De Winter said he considered Abou Jahjah an anti-Semite, an accusation rejected by Abou Jahjah — who last year called Antwerp Mayor “a Zionist cocksucker” on Twitter, and who founded a Muslim European group which published on its website a picture of Anne Frank in bed with Adolf Hitler as well as a caricature suggesting that Jews invented the Holocaust.

De Winter told JTA Thursday that his leaving De Bezige Bij after 30 years “is very painful” because of the company’s wartime history and its record of supporting its authors. “But when you add the worldview of a person like Abou Jahjah, which is incompatible with mine, when my publisher tries to hide these differences or perhaps prefers Abou Jahjah, then I have to go look for a new publisher,” he said.
De Winter is the fourth big name to leave De Bezige Bij since Abou Jahjah’s signing on in February. In June, the publishing house lost Jessica Durlacher, a celebrated Jewish author who is de Winter’s wife, and the award-winning novelist Tommy Wieringa. Both of them cited Abou Jahjah as a factor that led to their departure.
Durlacher said she did not want to share a platform with “someone who uses the word Zionists to describe Jews, and calls himself a radical anti-Zionist,” according to Volkskrant.
John Irving, the American novelist and Academy Award-winning screenwriter, announced together with de Winter that he would be leaving De Bezige Bij, though Irving’s decision was unconnected to Abou Jahjah, according to NRC Handelsblad, a Dutch daily newspaper.
The Jewish Chronicle of London has described Abou Jahjah — who famously has posed for a picture while holding an AK-47 assault rifle in his native Lebanon — as a former Hezbollah combatant.
After the 9/11 attacks of 2001 in New York, Abou Jahjah spoke of his “feeling of victory,” and has called Antwerp, which has a large community of Orthodox Jews, the “international capital of the Zionist lobby,” according to NRC.
In an interview published last week in the Dutch daily Volkskrant, Abou Jahjah defended his claim that the Israeli flag is comparable to that of Nazi Germany “because both countries practiced ethnic cleansing.” He rejected claims that this and past statements by him were anti-Semitic, and said that de Winter and Durlacher are the ones who don’t belong at De Bezige Bij because “they support occupation, that of Israel.”
"I have only one phrase to all the Zionists invaders in Palestine: La valise ou le cercueil (either the suitcase or the coffin)."

France: French ISIS operative in anti-Semitic rant: Hitler was more honorable than any Jew

Via MEMRI:

French ISIS Operative Rachid Kassim in anti-Semitic rant: fhe Holocaust is a lie; Hitler was more honorable than any Jew

On September 15, 2016, French ISIS operative Rachid Kassim published a 10-minute audio message on his Telegram account in which he expressed virulently anti-Semitic and conspiratorial views about Jews, saying that the Holocaust is a lie designed to make money for Jews, and that all the atrocities allegedly committed by the Nazis against Jews are actually committed by Israel against the Palestinians.
While anti-Semitic rhetoric is usual among jihadis, these views expressed by a Western ISIS fighter offer insight into ISIS's indoctrination and recruitment methods in the West. Rachid Kassim is a known recruiter for ISIS in Europe, and has been directly involved in inciting individuals to perpetrate terror in France.[1] This audio message forms part of his ongoing recruitment campaign. The interesting characteristic of this message is that it avoids the usual Islamic, Salafi and jihadi themes, focusing instead on sharing his paranoid worldview in which Muslims (and presumably others) are victims of a Jewish conspiracy. This broadens the appeal of the message and helps to present ISIS ideology and actions as a legitimate reaction to aggression against Muslims.

UK: British Jewish population has decreased

Via JTA:
The number of Jewish schools in Britain and their enrollments have dramatically increased even as the overall Jewish population in the country has decreased, a new study has found.
The study by the Institute for Jewish Policy Research found that while the British Jewish population has decreased from 410,000 to 300,000 since the 1950s, the number of Jewish schools and the number of Jewish students enrolled in those schools has risen significantly, by 400 and 500 percent respectively.
While one in five Jewish children attended a Jewish school in the 1970s, that number rose to about two-thirds, totaling 30,900 students, in the 2014-2015 academic year, the study found.

Italy: Gay advocacy group denounces BDS movement

The Italian lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender- intersex (LGBTI) advocacy organization Associazione Radicale Certi Diritti approved a resolution condemning the “pinkwashing” theory as a political movement that promotes the delegitimization of Israel and the BDS movement by exploiting the LGBTI cause.

The organization became the first European LGBTI group to denounce the practice during its national congress held in Turin November 18-20.

“The alarming rise of political calls by LGBTI groups to boycott Israel distracts from the real battle for human rights of Palestinian LGBTI, and advances the boycott of Israeli, Jewish and Zionist associations as well as any group that has ties with Israel,” the resolution said.

France: Presidential candidate’s claim about Jews not respecting the law "a misunderstanding"

From JTA:
A spokesperson for Francois Fillon, a leading contender in the upcoming French presidential election, sought to soften the candidate’s claim that Jews in the past did not respect French law.
Jérôme Chartier said Wednesday that criticism of Fillon was “a misunderstanding” of the candidate’s attempt to note all religions have extremists.
“Francois Fillon is very clear on the fact that there may occur in all religious groups sectarian streams,” Chartier said. “They exist, everybody knows it. But at the same time he has always appreciated the integration of Jews in France.”
Chartier added, “The Jews of France are French like the Christians of France are French and the Muslims of France are French, except for those who partake in Islamic sectarianism, in Islamic totalitarianism, which needs to be fought against.
Chartier’s statement came after Fillon said earlier Wednesday that France must combat Muslim sectarianism like “we fought against a form of Catholic sectarianism or like we fought the desire of Jews to live in a community that does not respect the laws of the French Republic.”
Haim Korsia, the chief rabbi of France, called on Fillon to set the record straight, the rabbi’s office said in a statement.
Korsia “underlined that any communal insularism that might have existed in the past was neither the result of any action nor the expression of any choice by Jewish citizens, but the consequence of their non-acceptance” by non-Jewish Frenchmen.

UK: Israeli BDS Activist Among Top Candidates for Presidency of Jewish Student Umbrella Organization

Via Algemeiner:
An Israeli BDS activist who has downplayed Arab terrorism against his fellow countrymen, is one of three candidates nominated to run for the leadership of Britain’s Jewish student umbrella organization, The Algemeiner has learned.

Eran Cohen — a student at the University of York who will be contending in the upcoming Union of Jewish Students (UJS) presidential election — is a vocal promoter of divestment from the Jewish state and served as the BDS officer of the school’s Palestinian Solidarity Society (PalSoc), which held “Israel Apartheid Week” activities on campus and was responsible for the passage last year of a student government motion to boycott goods produced in West Bank settlements.

In an April 2015 oped, Cohen urged his peers at York to support the motion, calling it “an opportunity for the student body to show solidarity with the Palestinian people and send a strong message to say that the military occupation and annexation of Palestinian land for Israeli settlements must end.”

He also referred to the “ongoing oppression of the Palestinian people,” and accused the Israel Defense Forces of creating and perpetuating an “atmosphere of fear and paranoia in the West Bank [where] non-violent protests are quashed with tear-gas and batons” — without mention of the terrorist attacks committed by Palestinians against Israeli soldiers and civilians on a regular basis.

In addition, Cohen produced and acted in “Seven Jewish Children: A play for Gaza“ — staged by the PalSoc for Israel Apartheid Week — which was denounced by York’s Jewish Society (JSoc) and other organizations as antisemitic.

Germany: Few Nazi-crimes suspects lost pensions, while many Jewish and other Nazi victims received no compensation

Via Ynet News:
Lina Heydrich, the widow of assassinated top Nazi Reinhard Heydrich, one of the main architects of the Holocaust, was among the most prominent recipients in the last category. She died in 1985.
Tens of thousands of Nazi war crimes suspects may have been able to continue
receiving disability pensions despite a law passed nearly two decades ago ordering them revoked, according to an official review quietly published Tuesday that revealed that only 99 people lost their payments.
The review, commissioned by the Labor Ministry and posted on their website, concludes that several factors led to the poor success rate, including the sheer scale of the task reviewing tens of thousands of cases, the lack of digitalization of key files, legal challenges and, in some cases, apathy in implementing the law.

When the law was passed in 1998, the expectation was that it would result in up to 50,000 people losing their pensions, according to the report.
But the review found that only 99 people suspected of "crimes against the principles of humanity" ever lost their pensions. The research covered the years 1998-2013 but no more have been removed to date.
"The results are incredibly disappointing," said Efraim Zuroff, the top Nazi hunter at the Simon Wiesenthal Center. "I never thought in my worst nightmares that the number would be so low."

The Labor Ministry would not comment on the phone and did not immediately respond to emailed questions.

In 1950, West Germany approved special pensions for "victims of war" for those injured in World War II, at which time some 4.4 million people qualified for payments. Recipients ranged from civilians injured in Allied bombings to SS death camp guards, as well as their widows and some other dependents.

Lina Heydrich, the widow of assassinated top Nazi Reinhard Heydrich, one of the main architects of the Holocaust, was among the most prominent recipients in the last category. She died in 1985.
In 1998, amid outrage that possible war criminals were receiving compensation but many Jewish and other Nazi victims were not, the law was changed to exclude anyone who had committed "crimes against the principles of humanity or the rule of law."

Haverbeck has been charged with Holocaust denial—which a crime in Germany—over the content of several articles she wrote for the Voice of the Reich magazine. She was sentenced for two and a half years in prison.

Norway: Trondheim joins BDS

Via the Local:
The Trondheim City Council on Thursday approved a plan to boycott all Israeli goods and services that are produced in settlements in the the occupied Palestinian areas, Addresseavisen reported.
The resolution states that Israel continues to aggressively pursue its policy of occupation.

“Illegal settlements are expanding, the construction of the wall continues, Palestinians are subjected to daily harassment and face major obstacles in their daily lives. This is a policy that Trondheim Municipality cannot support. The municipality will therefore refrain from purchasing goods and services produced in the occupied territories,” it reads.

The city council is also asking residents of Norway's third largest city to personally boycott settlement goods and services.

Switzerland: Government wants Jews to fund their own security costs

Via Times of Israel:
Switzerland’s Jews need to fund their own security costs even though doing so is really the government’s responsibility, a Swiss government agency said in a report on anti-Semitism.

The unusual assertion came in a report published last week by the Swiss interior ministry’s Service for the Fight against Racism. It prompted a mixed reaction by the country’s Jewish communities, who welcomed the report’s naming of the problem but criticized its failure to offer alternative solutions.

“Where credible indications suggest that the Jewish community, Jews or Jewish institution may be targeted in violent attacks, the state — meaning the federal confederation or its cantons — is positively duty bound to offer protection and guarantee individual safety, even at the expense of elevated expenditure of human of financial resources,” states the 18-page document, entitled “Report on the measures taken by the federal state to combat anti-Semitism in Switzerland.”

And while Swiss Jews are at such risk, “there is no constitutional or legal basis permitting the participation of the federal state in the costs of security costs to protect Jewish institution.” Therefore, “Jewish organizations could create a foundation for financing their security costs,” the document goes on to recommend.

On Thursday, the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities criticized the report in a statement titled “Jewish groups remind the federal state of its duties.”

This year the Jewish community of Malmö organized its own Kristallnacht memorial event, saying that in recent years the organizers of the municipal event overlooked the memory of the Jewish experience and antisemitic hatred.

Jehoshua Kaufman of the Jewish community says that the day had been 'kidnapped by very extreme groups'.   Various left-wing and radical left-wing groups have turned the day into an 'anti-racism' day, but without commemorating the events of Kristallnacht itself, the message falls flat.

Kristallnacht was a way for the Nazis to see how far the Germans were willing to go.  Many Germans either participated or turned away, while the rest of the world shrugged.  The message should be: we must be active and act.  Do not turn away when you see hatred.

Germany: Antisemitic behavior by Energie Cottbus fans

Via Faszination Fankurve, RP-online:

Energie Cottbus played against Babelsberg 03 this past Saturday.  Babelsberg fans are known for being leftist and anti-fascist.

Cottbus fans yelled out "Jews" and "Gypsies" at the opposing team and made the Hitler salute.  The club apologized for its fans behavior.

In addition, Cuttbus fans left antisemitic graffiti, saying Babelsberg were "Jews" and wishing they were gassed.

Norway: "Jew-Free" Kristallnacht ceremony in Bergen

The Kristallnacht memorial ceremony in Bergen once again boycotted Jews.

The organizers, staunch anti-Zionists who support boycotting Israel, did not invite any Jews to the official municipal ceremony.  Dozens of organizations were invited to join in planning the event, representing all the different communities in Bergen - except the Jewish community.

A few days prior to the event, the organizers tried to dismiss criticism by inviting a couple of Jews.  The Jews refused to play along and cover up for the organizers' antisemitism.

Jewish activist On Elpeleg says he came to the memorial ceremony in order to give out leaflets on behalf of the Jewish community asking to include all minorities in the future, but was roughly pushed away.

In 2014, Anti-racism group "Nye SOS Rasisme" demanded a "memorial Without Zionists" and boycotted the event when Jews were invited.

Sweden: Paper criticized for anti-Semitic Trump & Netanyahu cartoon

Via the Local:
A Swedish newspaper has been criticized for running a cartoon of Israeli Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President-elect Donald Trump in which the two are being carried by an Orthodox Jew, a KKK member and a gun-carrying figure branded with the Israeli flag, with critics calling the drawing anti-Semitic.

A speech bubble placed above the two politicians in the Dagens Nyheter (DN) drawing says “Finally!” in Swedish ("Äntligen").

An image of the cartoon started to spread on Twitter over Sunday and Monday. Journalist Annika H Rothstein called it "anti-Semitic", as did Swedish writer Rebecca Weidmo Uvell.

When Weidmo Uvell sent a tweet to a DN account asking “how can you publish clearly anti-Semitic propaganda? Jews carrying Trump together with the KKK? Please explain,” the account replied “Netanyahu has celebrated Trump’s victory despite Trump’s rhetoric and the enthusiastic support he has received in the USA from the white power movement”.

“That is among the weakest arguments I have seen. The cartoon would have made Hillersberg blush. That says a lot,” responded Göteborgs Posten writer Adam Cwejman. Cwejman was referring to Swedish cartoonist Lars Hillersberg, whose drawings have also been criticized for being anti-Semitic in the past.

France: Fundraiser for pets ended up unleashing rabid anti-Semitism

From the JTA:
When he locked himself up for three days inside a cage at an animal shelter in France, standup comedian and video artist Rémi Gaillard sought to raise awareness and money for abandoned pets.
But Gaillard’s fundraiser last week took a nasty turn, unleashing a vulgar shaming campaign with anti-Semitic dog whistles against Elie Semoun — one of the country’s best-known comedians, whose only sin was declining to help Gaillard’s cause.
The tweet referred to Semoun as a “television whore” who refused to support Gaillard because “he has an image.” Gaillard noted his 72-hour stay in the cage led to donations of more than $200,000 despite Semoun’s alleged refusal to help. It was retweeted almost 6,000 times and received 5,300 “likes.”
Taking the high road, Semoun replied by tweeting a picture of his three cats, which he said he had rescued, adding they are sending kisses, “purrs and love.” Meanwhile, some members of France’s stand-up scene defended Semoun, saying Gaillard’s attack against him was uncalled for.
The exchange might have ended there had it not caught the attention of Dieudonne M’Bala M’Bala — another comedian and a former friend and partner of Semoun before he became a “professional anti-Semite,” as French Prime Minister Manuel Valls called Dieudonne for his multiple convictions for incitement for hatred against Jews. (...)
On Nov. 15, Dieudonne posted online a video entitled “Dieudonne supports Rémi Gaillard versus Elie Semoun.” In it, he applauded Gaillard for insulting Semoun and repeated the insult, calling his former partner a “whore.”
That video has been viewed nearly 100,000 times and touched off an avalanche of anti-Semitic comments on YouTube and other social media (one of them spoke of “Rothschild parasites”).

Via CFCA:
Dnepropetrovsk – the police in Dnepropetrovsk opened an investigation after a young Jewish man was attacked and lightly wounded by antisemitic youngsters in the center of Dnepropetrovsk in eastern Ukraine.

The young man was walking near the “Menorah Center” in the center of Dnepropetrovsk, a town located on the Dnieper River, southeast of the capital Kiev. The “Menorah Center” is the largest Jewish community center in the world. Two young men suddenly approached him and began to insult him. They did not stop there, but also beat him, threw him to the ground, kicked him and he suffered injuries.

France: Baby named for killer of 4 Jews at Toulouse school

Via Times of Israel:
Prosecutors in the city of Nice in southern France were ordered to find legal ways to change the name of a baby whose parents named their son for the killer of four Jews at a school in Toulouse in 2012.

Unable to contest on legal grounds the parents’ choice of giving the boy the name Mohammed Nizar Merah, city officials listed the baby, who was born earlier this month, as requested by his parents, Nice Matain reported.

But Mayor Christian Estrosi said in a statement Friday that he had referred the case to the city prosecutor to have the baby renamed.

Portugal: Restaurant vandalized over chef’s visit to Israel

Portugal has a long history of anti-semitism and of hostility against Israel.  As Lisboa-Jerusalem reported, the memorial to the Jews massacred in Lisbon in 1506 is the most frequently vandalized monument in Lisbon (see pictures below).  In 2007, Jewish tombs were vandalized in a cemetery in Lisbon.

From JTA:
Anti-Israel activists vandalized a restaurant in Portugal because its head chef participated in a food festival in Israel.
The perpetrators, who are believed to be activists for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel, on Friday night spilled red paint on the façade of the Cantinho do Avillez restaurant in the northern city of Porto and posted signs on it reading: “Free Palestine,” “Avillez collaborates with Zionist occupation” and “Entrée: A dose of white phosphorus.”
The attack, which is rare in Portugal, followed picketing opposite the restaurant by BDS activists over the participation of chef Jose Avillez along with at least 11 other chefs from renowned dining establishments around the world in the Round Tables festival in Tel Aviv this month, which is sponsored by American Express.

UK: Friends of the Earth spokesman: Israel and ISIS are "best pals"

From Guido Fawkes:
Asad Rehman is a senior spokesman for Friends of the Earth and is leading their delegation at the next UN Climate Change conference. As you can see above, Asad has worked out who are the real baddies when it comes to climate change: those pesky Zionists. He says Netanyahu and Israel are “best pals” with ISIS and advocates banning “Zionist organisations” from climate change events.
