Senator Alain Destexhe (Reformist Movement) spoke recently about the antisemitism of MPS in the Regional Brussels parliament. Destexhe spoke at a pre-elections meeting in a Brussels area Jewish center.
Destexhe denounced the MPS who vote to boycott Israel while never discussing human rights abuses in Muslims countries, China and Tibet. He said the calls to boycott Israel are a manifestation of antisemitism, masked as a struggle against Zionism. He pointed out that in the reality of Brussels, stigmatizing Israel also means stigmatizing Jews.
Destexhe also said that the Holocaust is not taught in many schools in Bruseels and there is a resuregence of antisemitism in everyday life, to which the political community is not responding.
MP Ahmed Muhsin (Ecolo) responded by saying Destexhe is supporting Israel's racist policies, and that by equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism he is minimizing the severity of real antisemitism.
