André Comte-Sponville, a leading French philosopher who has taught at the Sorbonne, told Le Point that he is ashamed and hurt that 70 years after the liberation of Auschwitz France is unable to protect its Jews. Had he been told this when he was 16 he would not have believed it.
He added:
"The rise in antisemitism is a major problem. I understand the anxiety and alarm felt by of thousands of religious and non-religious Jews. I have a number of Jewish friends who are atheists and who have no sympathy for the Israel authorities but who are thinking of moving to Israel because they are firghtened of what will happen to their children. The suffering is appalling..."
