France: Town names street after Yasser Arafat

I24 News reports:

The municipal council of the French commune of La Seyne-sur-Mer adopted a proposal to name a newly built street after deceased Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat, the Nice Matin newspaper reported Tuesday.

The proposal was adopted by a large majority of the elected representatives of the southern French community.  Mayor Marc Vuillemot told the Nice Martin that the proposal was brought forward by the commune's residents, with only a few representatives voting against the measure.

Those opposing the move, reportedly expressed their protest against honoring a "controversial figure" or, for some, a "terrorist".

"There is also a Yitzhak Rabin-street in the district. To my knowledge, the two men received the Nobel Peace Prize together," the Vuillemont said in response to the critics of the proposal. More.
