A Sinn Fein motion urging boycott of Israeli products passed in two North Ireland districts, prompting calls for officials to relinquish use of Apple products that contain Israeli-produced components, the BBC reported on Tuesday.
The ultra-nationalist, republican party is part of Northern Ireland’s power-sharing local government, which was formed as part of the 1998 Good Friday agreement to heal a conflict in which 3,500 people were killed.
A local parliamentarian with the rival Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) told BBC Derry City and Strabane District councilors should stop using iPads handed out to state servants if they were to embrace the boycott.
"The iPhone I'm using, the iPads the council use, they all use components that come out of Israel," Gary Middleton said.
The author of the motion, councilor Christopher Jackson of the Sinn Féin, dismissed the criticism as "nonsensical," accusing Middleton of "looking to grab headlines".
"The motion itself was symbolic and in my view it has been successful in raising awareness in the council area and elsewhere," he said.
