Europe: Jewish Life 'Unsustainable' Due to Rising Anti-Semitism

Kantor was speaking at a press conference where the annual findings for 2013 were released by The Kantor Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry and the Moshe Kantor database for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism and Racism at Tel Aviv University, in cooperation with the European Jewish Congress.
Results from the 2013 survey show that anti-Semitic attacks are growing in their intensity and cruelty. The number and type of violent attacks against Jews and Jewish institutions is worsening.

Russia: RT news anchor believes "there is too much Jewish money in America"

RT sits on Freeview three channels away from the BBC, two from Sky News. For a while its audience figures in Britain were higher than Al Jazeera's. But if RT wants its viewers to question more, it also has a clear idea of what answers we should find. In recent interviews in Moscow with me and at RT's new studios in London, its reporters and producers revealed a view of the world, from conspiracy theories to other, more worrying beliefs, that should give cause for concern.
According, for example, to Rory Suchet, RT's main news anchor, other news channels are controlled by "financiers" and "corporations". It is all, he told me, part of the "military-industrial complex" and he mused how some people believe "there is too much Jewish money in America". There is an argument, he suggested, that "Jewish money controls a huge amount of foreign policy in Washington".

Spain: "Kill the Jews" toast

In parts of Spain, and especially in the north, locals use the term “killing Jews” (matar Judios) to describe the traditional drinking of lemonade spiked with alcohol
at festivals held in city squares at Easter, or drinking in general.

Leon will hold its “matar Judios” fiesta on Good Friday, April 18, where organizers estimate 40,000 gallons of lemonade will be sold.

The name originates from medieval times, when converted Jews would sometimes be publicly executed in show trials at around Easter, Maria Royo, a spokesperson for the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain told JTA.

“Regrettably, this type of expression exists in Spain in ceremonies and parties,” she said, but added that “the people saying it are mostly unaware of the history. It is a complicated issue that is ingrained in local culture.”

Ukraine: Fliers in Donetsk call on Jews to register or risk deportation

Pro-Russian separatists from Donetsk in eastern Ukraine denied any involvement in the circulation of fliers calling on Jews to register with separatists and pay special taxes.
(...)
On Tuesday, the news website novosti.dn.ua reported that the fliers were handed out that day by three unidentified men in balaclava masks carrying a flag of the Russian Federation. According to the report, the men distributed the fliers next to a local synagogue. The website quoted unnamed sources from the local Jewish community as saying that the fliers were an attempt to provoke a conflict and blame the attack on the separatists.

The flyers in Donetsk said all Jews who are 16 years old and above should register at the government building, which separatist protesters are occupying, and pay a registration fee of $50 by May 3.
“Jews supported the nationalistic gang of [Stepan] Bandera in Kiev,” the authors wrote in reference to the Ukrainian Nationalist leader who in the 1940s fought with Nazi Germany against Soviet troops before he and his men took up arms against the German occupation.
The fliers also said Jews were hostile to the Donetsk Republic.

The children don't feel the anti-Semitism in the educational institutions, because it raises its head mainly in political protests on main streets."

Rabbi Vero adds that "there are no physical assaults of Jews, but people who walk around Budapest's streets with a skullcap are sometimes verbally attacked with shouts such as 'Jews, go home' or 'this is not your place.' There are drawings of swastikas and the Jews are afraid of being harassed."

Turkey: "Zionist takeover" plot on TV

Kind of ironic that a man whose stated goal is to make Turkey into an empire accuses "the Jews" of trying to do the same.

the "Red Apple" series, which has become a tremendous success among millions of viewers in Turkey and around the world, devoutly presents the ruler's worldview.

In the episode aired over the weekend, the Israelis – led by a female Mossad agent, a blond one of course – are trying to thwart Turkey's ambitions to become an empire. The agent gets an order not to hesitate to murder "the enemies," and a young man wearing a skullcap, who is presented as "Aharon Feller, a member of a Golan Heights kibbutz and an offspring of the Maccabees," lights a Hanukkah menorah before going out to fulfill her orders.

(...)

But the Israelis in the series have plans of their own: To establish the "Sons of Zion Kingdom" in Turkey in collaboration with the Kurd separatist movement and members of the Armenian minority, and to extend it from the Egyptian Nile to the Euphrates River in Iraq.

Op-Ed: "Jews left [Spain] in 1492 — but the anti-Semitism stayed behind"

Ilan Stavans writes in the New York Times:
Spain finds itself still mired in the worst financial crisis in memory. Inviting Jews to settle in times of economic trouble is a strategy employed before, including in the Hispanic world. At the end of the 19th century, Jewish immigrants were courted as harbingers of modernity by Argentina and Mexico. And in the 20th century, the region of Sosúa on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic was allocated for Jewish refugees from the Holocaust — in hopes that they would push the underdeveloped region forward.

Spain’s latter-day conversion to philo-Semitism, however, is more apparent than real. The truth is that the Jews left in 1492 — but the anti-Semitism stayed behind. The country is a prime example of a nation that fosters “anti-Semitism without Jews,” a phenomenon often marked by dualist attitudes. Take the dictatorship of General Franco, from 1939 until 1975: Some Jewish refugees were saved by various consuls and other diplomatic administrators, with Franco taking credit, yet his fascist forces regularly used anti-Semitic motifs in their propaganda. Even in 1982, on my first visit to Spain, I recall seeing swastikas, copies of Mein Kampf in translation and Nazi paraphernalia for sale.

Russia: "Hitler financed by Jewish capital"

Via Magnus Ljunggren in Expressen:

Following the discussion on Russia 24 on how Jews brought the Holocaust on themselves, Russian broadcasters RTR and NTV continued on with the theme.

In one they discussed how Hitler was financed by "Jewish capital".  In the other they declared that the two Ukrainian leaders: presidential candidate Yulia Tymoshenko and PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk - were of "Jewish ancestry".

Both Tymoshenko and Yatsenyuk  have long been 'accused' of being Jewish.  In the previous elections in the Ukraine, Tymoshenko's rivals spread flyers warning "Don't vote for a Jew!"

According to the source JewishNet in Odessa, when an activist from a Jewish community in Odessa tried to speak to the provocatiors in Hebrew, the only answer he heard was “f…cking Jew”.

France: Jews met with quenelle, then attacked

I've already reported several times that the quenelle gesture is being used to harass and intimidate Jews.  Add this one to the list.

Via JSS News:

On Saturday a father and son were attacked on their way home from the synagogue in Sarcelles, near Paris.

The Jews, who were wearing distinctive Jewish clothing, were met by a group of four Black men, who made the quenelle gesture at them.  When the father responded with a gesture of his own, the two were attacked.  The father was lightly injured.

UK: Footballers charged by FA over support for antisemitic quenelle

The two voiced support for the quenelle after the FA decided it's an antisemitic gesture.

Benoît Assou-Ekotto and Yannick Sagbo are facing bans for tweeting their support for Nicolas Anelka’s quenelle goal celebration.
(...)
Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri and Liverpool defender Mamadou Sahko escaped with a rap on the knuckles for being photographed performing the quenelle gesture itself prior to Anelka using it to celebrate a goal in West Bromwich Albion’s Premier League game at West Ham United on December 28.
But Assou-Ekotto, on loan at QPR from Tottenham Hotspur, and Sagbo were both charged with improper conduct for postings made on Twitter in the wake of Anelka’s celebration.
With Anelka having been found guilty of an anti-Semitic act just over a month ago – something which saw him banned for five matches and his West Brom contract terminated – the FA was free to pursue others caught up in the *quenelle* scandal.
They included Assou-Ekotto, who tweeted in French in response to Anelka’s celebration: “I congratulate you on the beautiful quenelle.”
Sagbo tweeted a picture of the celebration alongside the word: “Legend.”
