Germany: Comedian asks 'why do Germans have to pay for Israeli wars?'

Via Watch Project (via Aluhut für Ken):

Comedian Uwe Steimle, famous for his Eastern German comedy, was part of a public service broadcasting show by WDR.de where he simply asked the question: "Why are Americans and Israelis always starting a war and we Germans have to pay for this shit?"

Turkey: Erdogan calls for ‘liberation’ of Jerusalem from the Jews

Ynet News reports:

Just one week before upcoming parliamentary elections in Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and officials in his Justice and Development Party (AK Party) found a unique way to try and secure a victory at the polls by calling for the "liberation" of Jerusalem.

"Conquest is Mecca, conquest is Saladin, it's to hoist the Islamic flag over Jerusalem again; conquest is the heritage of Mehmed II and conquest means forcing Turkey back on its feet," said Erdoğan in a speech on Saturday in Istanbul before millions who appeared to celebrate 562 years since the Turks captured Constantinople from European Christians. Erdoğan drew a straight historical line between the capture of Jerusalem from the crusaders by Saladin and the capture of Constantinople to the elections in Turkey due to take place next week. Although state employees were required to send a delegation to the celebration, under the threat of punishment, local media reported that many partakers left during the President's speech.

Attempts by Erdoğan and his allies to find political support by linking Jerusalem and Islam have formed a clear and solid trend in Turkey. Only a few days ago, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu dedicated a new airport in the south of the country, naming it after Saladin. According to Davutoğlu, "It's a name that says to the Kurds, to Turkey, and to the Arabs, yes, this is our leader.
"It's a symbol that unites us," he continued. "All those who claim that Jerusalem is the Jew's holy city should be ashamed. We chose the name Saladin in order to send a message with the help of Allah that Jerusalem will always belong to the Kurds, to Turkey, to Arabs, to Muslims."  More.

Germany: Spiegel magazine 'manufactured diplomatic crisis with Israel'

The Jerusalem Post reports:

Der Spiegel alleged that Israel denied Steinmeier’s plane permission to fly through its airspace during a trip to the Middle East in May because he snubbed a visit to Israel.

Israel’s embassy in Berlin and the Foreign Ministry vehemently denied a German Der Spiegel article alleging that Israel’s air traffic authority denied German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s plane permission to fly through its airspace during a trip to the Middle East in May because he snubbed a visit to Israel. ”With regret we take note of the news item in the new Spiegel edition,” Adi Farjon, the spokeswoman for Israel’s embassy in Berlin, wrote to The Jerusalem Post.

“Although the flight route of the foreign minister was presented correctly, the described reasons for a change of flight route is completely unfounded. Flight routes to Israel and over Israel are determined by Israel’s air authority and dependent on many factors; political considerations, however, do not play a role.”

“The named reason is therefore not comprehensible,” Farjon added. “At the time that Foreign Minister Steinmeier travelled to Lebanon and Jordan, our Foreign Ministry was already preparing the Israel trip of the foreign minister long before the flight question to the Israeli air traffic authorities.”

Ulrich Sahm, a veteran German journalist in Israel, asserted in a Monday article that Spiegel manufactured the crisis between Israel and Steinmeier.

“Spiegel’s contention is astonishing, because at that time it was already known that Steinmeier would be coming to Israel in two weeks to receive an honorary doctorate at Hebrew University,” wrote Sahm, a prominent German journalist in the German-language website Israelnetz. The article’s title states: "Spiegel invents annoyance between Israel and Germany."  More.

Worth recalling this about Spiegel:

The Samuel Wiesenthal Center listed Jakob Augstein, owner/editer, of the Spiegel, among the authors of the top ten anti-semitic/anti-Israel slurs in 2012.  This is what Mr. Augstein wrote:

“With backing from the US, where the president must secure the support of Jewish lobby groups, and in Germany, where coping with history, in the meantime, has a military component, the Netanyahu government keeps the world on a leash with an ever-swelling war chant.”

“Israel’s nuclear power is a danger to the already fragile peace of the world. This statement has triggered an outcry.Because it’s true. And because it was made by a German, Guenter Grass, author and Nobel Prize winner. That is the key point. One must, therefore, thank him for taking it upon himself to speak for us all.”

“Israel is threatened by Islamic fundamentalists in its neighborhood. But the Jews also have their fundamentalists, the ultra-orthodox Hareidim. They are not a small splinter group. They make up 10% of the Israeli population. They are cut from the same cloth as their Islamic fundamentalist opponents. They follow the law of revenge.”

“The fire burns in Libya, Sudan, Yemen, in countries which are among the poorest on earth. But those who set the fires live elsewhere. Furious young people burn the American, and recently, the German flag. They, too, are victims, just like the dead at Benghazi and Sanaa. Whom does this all this violence benefit? Always the insane and unscrupulous. And this time it’s the U.S. Republicans and Israeli government.”

“Gaza is a place out of the end of times….1.7 million people live there on 360 sq. kilometers. Israel incubates its own opponents there.”

All translated quotes from Spiegel Online - Jakob Augstein

Respected Die Welt columnist Henryk M. Broder, who has testified as an expert in the Bundestag about German anti-Semitism, labeled Augstein a “little Streicher” adding: “Jakob Augstein is not a salon anti-Semite, he’s a pure anti-Semite…an offender by conviction who only missed the opportunity to make his career with the Gestapo because he was born after the war. He certainly would have had what it takes.”

UK: Galloway will not make 'Israel free zone' in London as he tried in Bradford

How generous of him...  It shows how deeply ingrained Palestine has become in European political life.

The Jerusalem Post reports:

Controversial Respect party leader George Galloway who lost his Parliamentary seat in Bradford West at last month’s General election, has said he does not intend attempting to ban all Israelis from London if he should win next year’s mayoral elections in the capital.

Questioned on the BBC TV’s ‘Sunday Politics’,  he was pressed on the issue by program presenter Andrew Neil. He made clear that whilst he was not planning to declare London an ‘Israeli free zone’ it would certainly be his aim ‘to encourage the huge swell of pro-Palestinian support in London’.

“I think Palestine has more supporters in London than anywhere else in the country. But the Mayor is not the Pope and the Mayor is not the president and is not the prime minister or the foreign secretary.” More.

European ex Nazis paid $20 million in benefits by US

Many led nice lives after the war.  Even in the United States.

Times of Israel reports:

Social Security Administration report details millions paid out to 130 suspected Nazi war criminals

More than 130 suspected Nazi war criminals, SS guards and others who may have participated in the Third Reich’s atrocities during World War II collected $20.2 million in retirement benefits, according to the Social Security Administration’s inspector general.

In a report scheduled for public release next week and obtained by The Associated Press, the inspector general said nearly a quarter of the total, $5.7 million, went to individuals who were found to have played a role in the Nazi persecution and had been deported. More than $14 million was paid to people who weren’t deported but were alleged or found to have assisted the Nazis during a period in which millions of Jews perished in the Holocaust.

The report comes seven months after an AP investigation revealed benefits were paid to former Nazis after they were forced out of the United States. AP found that the Justice Department used a legal loophole to persuade Nazi suspects to leave the US in exchange for Social Security benefits. If they agreed to go voluntarily, or simply fled the country before being deported, they could keep their benefits.

Congress reacted swiftly by passing legislation to close the loophole and bar Nazi suspects from receiving benefits. President Barack Obama signed the measure into law late last year.  More.

France: More on the Les Indigènes 'riflemen' tweet

Yesterday I posted about a contentious tweet by the anti-racist Indigènes de la République movement, which said that Jews are the shields and infantry of French imperialism.

That tweet was part of a series of tweets, and in fact a summary of an entire article and so is a little out-of-context.   I also got a couple of in-depth explanations here and here.  Note that my translation ignored the cultural context.

The point of the article is that Jews are being used (as unwitting accomplices?) in French racist policies.  So I'd say it's not as directly antisemitic as I originally posted.  Or rather, not more antisemitic than anything else you'd expect from the anti-Zionist left.

In fact, the article is trying to deal with both antisemitism and other types of racism, while blaming French and Westerners exclusively and seeing Zionism as a European imperialist plot.  The Jews are compared to the Senegalese riflemen who raped and pillaged on command of their colonial masters.  As such, it excuses the Jews in order to focus on the 'real evil' of French imperialism, which is currently pitting Jews against Muslims in order to abuse both.

But, it still accuses Jews of war crimes and ignores the connection of Jews to their homeland.   The movement might be anti-racist and pro-indigenous, but Jews never ever get to be indigenous.  Not even in their own homeland.

I do agree though with the article that the French accept the Jews conditionally.  That shouldn't really be news to anybody who learns Jewish-French history.  Napoleon gave Jews equal rights as French citizens, but refused to give 'Jews' rights as such.  French secularism (laicite) allows you to practice any religion you want as long as you keep it out of the public sphere.  And so public schools can force kids to come to school on the Sabbath (as they did until recently) or take off their kippahs (as they only recently started doing) - and that's just fine, because we expect non-Jews to do it too.   This is also the reason why the 'veil law' and the newer 'pork laws' affect Jews far less than they do Muslims.  Most Jews who cared enough had already fled public school long before those laws came around.

Anyway, more of my rambling on this article here.

France: President likens jihadist attacks in Paris to Nazi-era hatred

Via Times of Israel:
French President Francois Hollande reiterated statements against anti-Semitism at a ceremony honoring a part-Jewish victim of the Nazis along with three other resistance fighters.

Hollande made the statements on Wednesday, at a ceremony for the reburial of the resistance fighters’ remains in the French republic’s Pantheon in Paris.

“Seventy years on, these hatreds re-emerge,” Hollande said of the racism promoted by the Nazis and their French collaborators during Germany’s occupation of France. The haters have “different faces and under different circumstances, but always with the same words, and the same intentions. They target innocents, journalists, Jews and policemen,” Hollande said.

Netherlands: Education ministry says not responsible for ‘anti-Israel’ textbook

Once again, we have a gap between what the government says ('we want Jews to feel at home') and what it does ('we aren't responsible for banning incitement against Jews in schoolbooks').

Via JTA:
The Dutch education ministry distanced itself from a textbook that contained statements deemed anti-Israeli.
The ministry’s statement on the book followed complaints by Jewish students and parents over the description in the book of Israel’s establishment as the result of widespread murder of Palestinian villagers. It also questioned Israeli former Prime Minister Menachem Begin’s credentials as a peacemaker, noting he was “known as a terrorist and extremist.”

Greece: Mainstream discourse dominated by conspiracy theories

Via ekathimerini (h/t  the Watch Project):
Mainstream discourse is dominated by theories and arguments that would hardly find a sympathetic ear elsewhere in Europe. At least, not to the same extent. There is no end to the crazy talk coming from the lips of politicians, priests, TV pundits – each from their own podium.

Neither the current government nor any other will ever succeed in cleaning up the mess at home before they find a way to tame the beast of populism. Government officials will soon be portrayed either as traitors or players in some global zionist conspiracy, and so will their successors and so on.

Germany: Anti-Nazi activist attacked, accused of being 'Jewish whore'

A woman living in Gelsenkirchen, who is active against right-wing extremists, was attacked several times in the past few months.

Her front door was now vandalized with graffiti saying "Jewish whore", swastikas and Jewish stars.

UK: Shabbat-observant woman wins $25k from firm that wouldn’t hire her

Via Times of Israel:
A British Jewish woman won $25,000 in damages from a company that refused to hire her because she is Shabbat observant.

Aurelie Fhima applied to Travel Jigsaw in Manchester, but was rejected after she said at a job interview that her religious observance prevents her from working on Friday nights and Saturdays, the Telegraph reported.

Travel Jigsaw officials sent her a letter saying that they could not hire her, because “We are still looking for people who are flexible enough to work Saturdays.”

When the company refused to reconsider its decision, she sued for religious discrimination.

France: Anti-racism movement says Jews are the 'infantry' for French imperialism, Islamophobia

Indigènes de la République is an anti-racist, anti-colonialist movement which also defines itself as "anti-Zionist".

And, once again, Jews are targeted by so-called anti-racists.

In a recent tweet the movement said as follows: The Jews are the shields, the infantry of the French imperialist politics and its Islamophobic policy.

Belgium: Brussels high school student leaves school following antisemitic harassment

Via CFCA:
Brussels - The mother of a 14 year old student, attending first year in Athénée Adolphe Max in Brussels, has filed a complaint on Friday for antisemitism, announced Joël Rubinfeld, president of the Belgian Association against Antisemitism.

The young boy refuses to return to class due to fear of further attacks and harassment. The French speaking student carries the Jewish name of his mother’s former husband, who has passed away. At the beginning of November, he explains that he was identified as “the Jew” and that he was physically threatened and insulted repeatedly as “dirty Jew”, “dirty Flemish” and other verbal insults with reference to Hitler. The student has therefore stopped attending any classes since May 5.  more

Netherlands: Party for Animals wants to ban ritual slaughter

Via De Telegraaf:

The Party for the Animals wants to again try and ban ritual slaughter.

Previously such a bill was rejected as it was found to limit freedom of religion.  The party thinks it can adapt their proposal so it would pass this time.
