UK: Anfield stadium rebranded as "Essex jews place of worship" on Google Maps

Tech giants Google were today investigating how its map of Liverpool FC’s Anfield stadium came to be tagged with the phrase: “Essex jews place of worship”.  The words were added to the search engine’s aerial map of the Reds’ ground today and was there for around three hours before being removed.

A spokesman said the company was looking into how the words came to be added, possibly through Google’s Map Maker service where anyone can make changes or additions.  The function is supposed to be heavily moderated.

The words appeared ahead of tomorrow’s home match against Tottenham Hotspur, which has traditionally drawn a large following from the Jewish communities in London and Essex.

The club’s fans proudly chant of its Jewish connections and regularly sing “Yid Army”, despite its offensive connotations.  Fans say the adoption of the word by Spurs fans is an attempt to deflect anti-Semitic abuse by rival fans.
