Belgian senator Alan Destexhe deplored on Facebook that the Jews of Belgium cannot meet freely wherever they want.
Two “Stumbling Stones” (“Pavés de mémoire”, brass plates embedded on the pavement) will be installed outside some the homes of
two Jews deported and murdered by the Nazis in 1944.
The organizers wished to hold the memorial ceremony on Friday at the Abbey of Forest but the municipality and the Mayor strongly argued against using the premises because "security could not be assured." The event will take place at a different non-public and secure venue.
Senator Destexhe writes: "The grim reality is that seventy years after the liberation of the camps we cannot commemorate victims of the Holocaust anywhere we choose in Belgium. This is also the reality of anti-Semitism".
