UK: MP ‘shocked and shaken’ by antisemitic abuse

Via Jewish Chronicle:
Darren Lumb abused Labour’s Jon Trickett, the shadow communities secretary, in the street in Mr Trickett’s Hemsworth constituency in West Yorkshire.

In court on Thursday, Lumb, 47, admitted the abuse and pleaded guilty to one count of religiously aggravated harassment and stalking, and one count of breaching an asbo.

Mr Trickett has been Hemsworth MP since 1996 and was previously leader of Leeds City Council.

He is not thought to identify as Jewish, but during Israel’s conflict in Gaza in 2014 he tweeted: “My mothers [sic] family were Jewish but what's happening in Palestine is #NotInMyName #Gaza #StoptheWar.”

He later added: "My Jewish roots are deeply important to me."

The year after his election Mr Trickett traveled to Israel with Labour Friends of Israel.

Lumb, of South Elmsall, will be sentenced on March 3. He is believed to have been a former British National Party activist and has also been linked to the English Defence League. The incident involving Mr Tickett took place in January last year.
